Who is St Luke's Church?
It's a good question, and one for which there are many types of answers.
For many the obvious answer might be that we are the church at the bottom of the hill in Brislington, in what is called locally 'The Village'. There's been a place of worship on the spot for many hundreds of years, and the Preaching Cross outside the church is very old indeed. Historically there's a lot to talk about: the pilgrim route to the Chapel of St Anne-in-the-wood and the holy well nearby; the remains of a Roman villa; the many estates and manors dotted around. All very interesting, but not really the answer.
We are not simply an historical suburb of Bristol. St Luke's is a living, breathing presence in the neighbourhood and we are excited to be able to be here, right now, in this place, worshipping God and finding ways to build the Kingdom today.
Our building is certainly beautiful, and the history matters, but only if we continue to make St Luke's an active and relevant church today. If historically St Luke's has been the parish church of the village of Brislington, then today we are a voice proclaiming the glory of God in a much more complicated and varied neighbourhood of Bristol.
We are a congregation of complements: young and old, traditional and progressive, quiet and noisy, patient and active, and more. We are all seeking a stronger and closer relationship with God, and believe that we can know God more fully through the work and inspiration of God's son, Jesus Christ.
We are all on a journey, whether we know we have been a Christian for many years, or have only recently begun to know God. At St Luke's you will find a group of people who simply want to find out more about what Jesus is doing in our world, in our lives. Please do come along to any of our services. There are three each Sunday and others regularly dotted throughout the week (look at the service section, and at the diary).
You will be made very welcome!
Our parish directory is woefully out of date. The last one was produced almost four years ago. An up to date directory is vital, so we need to know that your information is correct. If you have started coming to St Luke’s since 2006, or have changed any of your details since then, please let us know. Over the coming weeks there will be a form at the back of the church for you to enter your details. Since we last updated the directory, a great many more people have acquired email addresses. It would be great to have emails as well as phone numbers, so please leave details if you can. Email
